Gas struts

Gas struts, also referred to as boot struts, bonnet struts, gas dampers, or gas pressure springs, play a crucial role in keeping your car's boot lid or bonnet elevated when opened. Typically, the boot is equipped with two boot struts, while most modern cars have one or two bonnet struts, depending on the model. These components are vital for the seamless opening and closing of both parts. A malfunctioning gas spring becomes apparent when lifting and closing the bonnet or boot lid.

Replacing gas struts

Like most car parts, gas struts are subject to wear. Damage or corrosion often leads to their failure. Gas pressure springs endure a lot, especially during winter. Condensation can form inside the strut and freeze when temperatures drop. However, the most common reason for gas strut failure is a loss of pressure, which prevents the bonnet or boot lid from lifting properly. Other failure causes include oil leaks and broken fixing points. When replacing gas springs, it's recommended to change both boot struts simultaneously since they experience similar wear over time.

Installing gas struts

Installing gas struts is a straightforward task that generally takes only a few minutes. Handle the gas strut bar with care to prevent damage, as a damaged strut will lose gas and fail to function correctly. Install the gas strut with the piston rod facing down, release the retaining spring, and then press it back into position after assembly. Remove the safety clip, and install the new gas spring in reverse order. If your new gas strut has a metal plate, begin assembly from that side.

Gas struts

Gas struts, also known as gas springs, are essential for holding up the bonnet or boot lid of your vehicle. When these gas struts wear out, the bonnet or boot lid may no longer stay in place or lift as easily as before. To avoid the lid unexpectedly falling, it is advisable to replace the gas springs when they begin to fail. Winparts offers a comprehensive selection of gas struts for both the bonnet and boot lid.
