Fuel tank sender unit fault

A faulty fuel level sender means you don't know exactly how much fuel is left in the tank. This is not only annoying, but it can also damage the fuel pump. This is because fuel flows through the pump, providing lubrication and cooling. Without fuel, the pump can overheat and become damaged. Additionally, engine damage can occur if you frequently drive with low fuel. This is because dirt can accumulate at the bottom of the tank, causing the fuel filter to become clogged. Eventually, the dirt can clog the fuel lines and injectors. It is therefore important that you replace the fuel level sender on time. You can recognise a faulty sender by the following symptoms:

The fuel gauge remains full or fluctuates between empty and full.

The fuel warning light comes on unnecessarily.

Replacing the fuel tank sender unit

Replacing the fuel level sender requires some technical knowledge. This is because the sender is located inside the fuel tank. As a result, the tank often needs to be (partially) removed. The exact location of the tank opening varies depending on the make and model of your car. The owner's manual for your vehicle will describe exactly where you can find this. Before you start working, you should bear in mind that you will be working near fuel. Therefore, make sure you are well prepared. Do not smoke near the vehicle and keep a fire extinguisher nearby. It is also wise to wear gloves and safety glasses while working.

Would you prefer to have the garage replace the fuel level sender? Then order this part quickly and cheaply from Winparts and take it to the garage yourself. Ordering parts online is often cheaper than at the garage. In addition, you will then only have to pay for installation costs.

Fuel tank sender unit

The fuel tank sender unit is a component of the fuel system. This unit is located in the fuel tank and consists of a metal rod, float, and a resistor. As the fuel level sender floats on the fuel, the resistor determines how much fuel is in the tank. This information is transmitted to the car's computer system (ECU). This information determines how many miles you can still drive on this tank. Therefore, replace the fuel level sender in time in case of a defect. Enter your car details on our website so that we can show you the right parts.
