Clock spring

An essential part of your car's safety system is the clock spring. This wire is also known as a spiral cable, clock spring, contact reel, or coil spring. The clock spring connects the airbag to the control unit. It is a wide, flat wire wrapped around the steering column. The clock spring is specially designed so that the turning of the steering wheel is not hindered, and the airbag remains in contact with the sensors.

When the car is involved in a collision, this is measured by sensors. If the impact is so severe that the airbag needs to be deployed, these sensors send a signal to the control unit. The control unit then activates the gas generator using the clock spring.

The gas generator then inflates the airbag. This all happens in a few milliseconds. For your safety, it is important to replace the clock spring in your car if it is defective. This wire ensures that the airbag inflates in a collision.

Clock spring broken

If the clock spring in your car is broken, it is important to replace it. The wire transmits the signal from the control unit to the gas generator to inflate the airbag. The wire is wrapped around the steering column, and over time the wire can wear out due to frequent steering. The wire stretches a little each time. Eventually, the connection between the control unit and the airbag is lost.

You can recognise a defective clock spring by several symptoms. One symptom is an illuminated airbag warning light on the dashboard. The light indicates problems with the airbag. Another symptom is a cracking sound or bang at the steering column. The wire is mounted in the steering column; when it breaks, you will hear a cracking sound. If you recognise any of the above symptoms, check the airbag system and replace the clock spring if necessary.

Replacing the clock spring

The clock spring must be replaced when it is defective. When replacing the wire, you must ensure that the steering is in the middle position and that the wheels are pointing straight ahead. Failure to do so may later cause problems with steering and the operation of the indicators.

You should also ensure that the clock spring is not twisted before installation. If the wire is twisted, it will break while steering, and you will need to replace the clock spring again. Clock spring

A clock spring is an electrical cable that connects the airbag to the control unit. The clock spring is specially designed so that turning the steering wheel does not damage the wiring. The cable is coiled around the steering column and ensures that the airbag can deploy quickly in the event of a collision. When the clock spring is twisted, it can break. It is important to replace a broken cable, as the part is an integral part of the safety system. Enter your registration number or car details on the website and find the right airbag clock spring.
